Contemporary Diagnosis and Management of the Patient with Epilepsy by Ilo E. Leppik was published with the financial support of Pfizer. The following review refers to the most recent edition, namely Edition Six, copyright 2006.
This handbook is a cogent and very practical guide to caring for the seizure patient. It can be read cover to cover and/or used as a handy reference. Clinicians whose practice includes patients with epilepsy will find it to be a very useful tool. Especially informative are the chapters devoted to drug selection and drug interactions. The chapter on status epilepticus is very well written and comprehensive in scope.
Many will find chapter 9 "Serious Adverse Reactions and Laboratory Testing" to be controversial. In it, the importance and value of hematologic and hepatic monitoring of asymptomatic patients on anticonvulsants is greatly downplayed.
All in all, this is a worthwhile book to have in one's collection. Practical and up to date.
