To sum up my opinion, this book seems more like a book about the history / culture of Chicago than a tourist guide for the city. Specifically, the book has an interesting account of the history of the city, and many beautiful photos. Unfortunately, the descriptions of the sights and restraunts are not informative enough if this book was to be used as a tourist guide. This seems to be a general trend in the "Compass American Guides" line of Fodor's. A significant weakness in my opinion.
The section in this book about Grant Park is a representative example of the general feel of this book. The description of Grant Park feels a little short, but does does list all the important sights of the park. Furthermore, the photograph that accompanies the description of the park is of a little girl eating a watermelon. The picture is a closeup so that you can't actually see any of the park. This is useful for capturing Chicago culture, but not useful for knowing what the park is like. I would have prefered a picture of the famous Buckingham Fountain.
Also, this book does not say anything about the Millenium Park except to say that it exists. This is probably because the book was published in 2001 and that is the same year the park was opened. However, the Millenium Park is an important sight so it would be good to get a guide that includes a description of it.
